The coming Monday is Vesak Day in Singapore.
In Korea, this year’s Children’s Day (May 5) coincides with Buddha’s Birthday, so the substitute holiday fell on May 6, a Tuesday.
The three-day Chuseok holiday in October starts on Sunday, October 5, meaning the substitute holiday will be observed on Wednesday, October 8. For Koreans, knowing these dates in advance helps strategically use annual leave to stretch these breaks into longer vacations.
The Substitute Holiday System was first introduced in 1959, abolished shortly afterward, and then re-implemented in 2013. Initially, it applied only to Lunar New Year, Chuseok, and Children’s Day, and only if they fell on a Sunday.
In 2023, the system was expanded to include Buddha’s Birthday and Christmas, even when they fall on Saturdays. As the laws are newly established, they remain confusing for locals too.
By contrast, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore observe substitute holidays only when public holidays fall on Sundays. In Vietnam and Thailand, both Saturdays and Sundays are covered.
This public holiday information could be handy when planning a trip to Korea, as some shops may close and you may need to navigate crowded transportation.

대체공휴일이 뭐예요?
이번 주 월요일은 싱가포르에서 석가탄신일입니다.
한국에서는 올해 어린이날(5월 5일)과 부처님 오신 날이 같은 날이에요. 그래서 5월 6일 화요일이 대체공휴일이에요.
10월에도 추석 연휴가 있어요. 10월 5일 일요일부터 시작되는데, 대체공휴일은 10월 8일 수요일이에요. 한국 사람들은 이런 날들을 미리 알고, 연차휴가를 잘 사용해서 긴 연휴를 만들어요. 특히 5월 1일 근로자의 날이나 10월 같은 때는 쉬는 날이 많기 때문에 계획을 잘 세우면 며칠 더 쉴 수 있어요.
대체공휴일 제도의 역사
한국에서는 1959년에 처음 대체공휴일 제도가 생겼어요. 하지만 곧 없어졌고, 2013년에 다시 시행되었어요. 처음에는 설날, 추석, 어린이날이 일요일과 겹칠 때만 적용됐어요.
